Question:
Does anyone know any Dr's in New York who do Psychiatric Evalutations?

This question may sound strange but, does anyone know any Dr's in the New York area (Queens, Long Island, Brooklyn) who do Psychiatric Evaluations? This is the last thing my insurance company is waiting for. I can have it done at the Hospital where I am having my surgery but, this will take a long time as you have to go on the waiting list and they mail you a date to come in. My surgeon wants me to have this done asap. I got a list of about 20 names of Dr's from my insurance company but, everyone I call says they don't do these evaluations. I'm frustrated. Of course I would prefer to go to someone who is experienced with other people going through the surgical process. I appreciate any info.    — Jodie R. (posted on October 30, 1999)

I don't live in New York, but I did have to have a psych evaluation before my surgery. I did not have this done with a MD Psychiatrist, but rather with a PhD Psychologist. So, maybe you are calling the wrong type of providers. You could call your local hospital, or psychiatric facility, and ask for the names of psychologists that do evaluations or personality inventories. I'm sure someone must do evaluations on the people who are being hospitalized for mental problems. Another possibility is to ask your weight loss surgeon for the names of the psychologists who his other patients have used. Good Luck! Lynn

I hope this helps....you don't need to use a psychiatrist ( they are harder to find and tend not to do evaluations that will not be long term ) . Try for a psychologist or clinical social worker ( easier to find and more willing to do a one visit thing ) . I used a psychologist that I got from my insurance list. He wasn't familiar with the surgery, so I explained it to him and he was amazed. It was a long session but I walked out of there feeling comfortable with what I know! My surgeon gave me a name...she does these type of evaluations, but may not be a part of your ins ( was not of mine). Her name is Dr. Harf 718-226-8918.She charges $150, but she knows what she is doing. By the way..I am from Brooklyn..I think she may be from Queens..but she is local and I hear QUICK..... If you go to someone from your ins, ask your surgeon for a list of questions or areas to be covered..this will help. Good luck and your on your way ! Jackie
