Question:
Has any one had elevated liver enzymes and did it effect your surgery ?
I had some preop blood test and one came back saying thatI had elevated liver enzymes, that dr. wasn't to concerned but i am feeling a little upset by it and was wondering if anyone else had had this problem and what was the possible cause? — Jennie D. (posted on May 30, 2001)

Hi. My liver enzymes were dangerously high before my wls 6/29/00. My
gastro doc had given me 5 years or less to live if I didn't do something
about the weight. Unfortunately he didn't tell me about wls, so it took me
another year to find out about the surgery and get it done. I had my
enzymes checked 5 weeks post-op and they were near normal. They can tell
with a liver scan (like a cat scan) if it is fatty liver or something more
serious. mine was just fatty liver, but was progressing to cirossos(sp).
The elevated enzymes, if indeed fatty liver should not stop you from having
surgery, in fact, they should be a documented comorbid condition. Good
luck!! luv,.....

Jennie,
Yes, I had the same problem with my liver enzymes along with elevated
levels with some of the other bloodwork. Both my surgeon and PCP explained
that this is not uncommon in the MO and were not concerned about it.
During the surgery they even did a biopsy of the liver and said it was just
fine. Good luck and I hope this helps.
