Question:
Will I be able to sleep in my normal bed after the Lap RNY??

I read very often about the Open RNY and the people have to sleep on the sofa or in a recliner. Is is the same for people who have had the Lap RNY?? Just curious. Trying to decide which will be best for me. Thanks to everyone for their help in my journey.    — Tere F. (posted on March 28, 2001)

I had Lap 3 weeks ago and just now am finally able to sleep in my own bed on my side. I'm normally a stomach sleeper so this surgery has forced me to sleep on my back or side for the time being. Thank goodness I can finally sleep in my own bed now though, it makes me sleep so much better.

Hi Tere. When I had my lap rny, I slept in the chair in the hospital because the bed was horrible. After I got home, I slept in bed the first night or two. Then I fell in love with my recliner. Inside, both laps and open are the same. Our muscles are cut through as well. They pull and are tender. I believe that pillows make sleeping in bed tolerable but I found my recliner to be much more comfy.

I had lap six weeks ago, I slept in a recliner for about the first three weeks and now half bed, half recliner. It is very hard to sleep in the bed because I can only sleep on my stomach, which sometimes still hurts after a while laying on it. I guess it depends on the way you sleep. If I could sleep on my back or side, I dont think the bed would be a problem.

I had Lap last November on Election Day. I couldn't sleep on a bed because it was painful. My wife and I moved down to the family room, and she slept on a love seat while I took the sofa, well-inclined with pillows (she's 5'2", I am 6'6"). It worked too well--I became addicted to the sofa, and only moved back to the bed last week at my wife's insistance. I haven't had any surgical pain for a long time, but I sure fell in love with sleeping on an incline.

I had my Lap surgery In October. I had no problems what so ever sleeping in a bed. Good luck on your decision.

We are a family of lap RNY patients (3). We each slept in our own beds post-op without any problems. If you are a "stomach-sleeper" it will probably be 2-3 weeks before you can accomplish that again. An extra pillow may provide more comfort initially. Remember that the more you turn, change position, and walk in the hospital, the less "sore" you will be by the time you get home. Good luck!

I had OPEN Rny and incisional hernia repair and I slept in my bed with no problems. But, I did kick my hubby out for a couple of weeks cause I sure didn't want him to bump me or kick me accidentally.
