Question:
Are there any percentages about how many gall bladders end up taken out?
I'd love it if my surgeon would go ahead and remove my gall bladder during surgery, but he only does it if he sees problems in pre op tests. I have a family history of problems, and have had many surgeries already. I am really hoping this will be the last one for me. Anyone want to comment on percentages of folks who end up back in the OR? Share some experiences? How do you know you are having trouble? — Amy K. (posted on March 5, 2001)

I asked my surgeon to take mine out during my surgery because I wanted to
avoid additional complications in the future. I'm like you, I did not want
to have another surgery so soon after this one. A friend had the surgery
also and the surgeon told her that if the gall badder is not filled with
stones and it is healthy, he would have to pay the hospital from his fees.
But if it is filled with stones, the insurance company will pay him to take
it out. It doesn't seem fair but that is typical of dealing with insurance
companies.
