Question:
The post-op nausea is getting me down. Ideas?

I'm nearly four weeks post-op. For the past ten days I've suffered from severe nausea about 60% of the time. I'm unable to consume much; the sight of food and drink even bothers me. Dr. prescribed Compazine, but it hasn't helped. I know this probably won't last too long, but I wanted some ideas about how to get through this.    — Lorri S. (posted on September 19, 2000)

I had alot of nausea the first 4 weeks. It was almost as bad as morning sickness. I cried because I thought it would never ever go away and I wondered why I chose this route. But one day it was gone completey. Just out of the blue I suffered no more. I am 10 weeks post op now and I feel all normal again. I am sure it is something that will pass as you get used to your new body. Best wishes

Maybe your doctor can prescribe prilosec. It was a lifesaver for me.

My surgeon REFUSED to give me Compazine! He said it slows the "gut down" too much which is not good post op. I had lots of sickness that first 5 wks. Felt very similar to you. I had to go back on liquid Boost Plus and water for a while. Then pureed foods. KEEP THE WATER GOING!! You don't want to get dehydrated. I ended up back in the ER 3 times in 9 days post op due to dehydration. They had to give me IV'S to compensate for the loss of water in my body. My surgeon kept on saying "this nausea will pass"..I said, "yeah right!" WHEN???? He said it is different for each person. I got vertigo which did not help the problem at all. I still have it as a matter of fact. I am able to eat almost anything now, though. Just hang in there and keep in contact w/ your surgeon..please question the idea of taking Compazine. My surgeon got very upset when one of the interns prescribed it for me when I left the hospital newly post op. Good luck!
