Question:
Where can I obtain information for a physician unfamiliar with WLS?
I am moving back to Michigan at the end of this month. The doctor that will be following me there is unfamiliar with WLS. Where can I obtain information for him to familiarize himself with the surgery AND with guidelines for following up (lab work, complications to look for, etc.)? — Connie G. (posted on July 14, 2000)

I can send you a list of the lab tests that hit the elements that pertain
to RNY people. Also, it is good for YOU to keep a copy of your op report
AND all labs in a file, so be sure you have copies of these to give your
new doc.

Check with your surgeon; he may have a packet of information for your MD
with all of the information specific to the follow-up of the WLS patient.
My surgeon prepares similar packets for all of his out-of-state patients.
Included in that packet was a copy of my operative report; pre-op and
post-op test results; a diagram of the surgical procedure itself; a lengthy
summary of follow-up instructions which included potential complications
and interventions; the expected dietary regimen; and subsequent labs which
would be required in the following months/years. If your surgeon does not
routinely supply this material for his out-of-state patients, these might
be some of the items to ask him to put together for your MD. Best wishes!
