Question:
can you suggest how to get around the terrible nausea from drinking ULTRA SLIM FAST?

I get very ill everytime I drink the slim fast as ordered by my nutritionist. I am supposed to be drinking this 3 - 4 times per day but cannot as it is too sweet. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am 6 weeks post op.    — Cheri H. (posted on July 30, 1999)

You might try using high quality protein supplements that are high in protein, low in sugar & lactose free. That might help with nausea or any bowel problems you are having.

I used sugar free carnation instant breakfast with skim milk and lactaid because the surgery made me lactose intolerant. It is really very good and that is what they gave me in the hospital before I left as my first liquid meaal. Good luck, Lorinda

The lactose in it makes me very ill too... feel like I am dying when I drink anything with any lactose in it. I have used the lactose free slim fast and it is not near as bad. there are some soy protein drinks on the market that are good and don't bother me. Ask your dietitian about these products. Best of luck in your quest.

Okay, this might sound pretty obvious, but tell your nutritionist that it makes you nauseaus and stop drinking it. Don't mean to be so blunt, but that's what I would do.

You are probably dumping from the sugar in Slim Fast. If you read the label the sugar count is way too high. I use an egg white protein powder, mixed with water (although you could use skim milk), or a designer whey. You can get them at health food stores or body building stores. Be sure to check to see that they have no sugar and little fat. I have umpteen unopened containers of Ultra Slim Fast as well as cans of it, sitting around in my cupboards aging.

You may not be able to tolerate milk. I was sick with having to drink sugar-free carnation instant breakfast. I am 18 months post-op and now am just starting to tolerate milk. I don't know how to get around it but ask you dietician what you can do.

You might try HMR shakes. They don't bother me and are very good for you. You can find them by doing a net search for HMR or Dr. Diet. If you can't find them that way, write me and I will give you the link.

Hi Cheri. I had the same problem post-op with Carnation Instant breakfast. I just couldn't tolerate it at all. To get my protein I use dry Instant milk to boost what I was drinking. Did they give you any recipes to try. I had a couple that weren't too bad. Also try a health food store for other means of protein supplements. But you have to becarful about sugar. Once you can have pureed foods I ate jars of baby food. Really----the chicken, turkey, and ham aren't bad. Hope this helps.

I would suggest that you try a Protein Powder such as can be bought at a GNC in a mall. They sell sugar free powders and you mix them with skim milk. I used that for several months. I am 15 mo. post-op and have lost 160# so far. Any more questions feel free to write me back. Good Luck.

Try Ensure lite. That is what I drink and have no problems with it.
