Question:
is it normal to have a plateau after 8 months?
I stopped losing after 8 months. Only lost 80 lbs. Since then, 9 months ago, haven't lost an ounce. This is very frustrating. Anybody know of this happening to them or anyone else? I feel like after all the pain and grief I was not successful with the rny. — why K. (posted on February 6, 2005)

I am 7 months post and have been on a plateau for the past 2 month. Mine
started when I could not work out at the gym due to hernias. I will not be
able to resume going to the gym until April. I know a lot of people have
not lost what they have hoped. There are so many factors that play in to
it. I hope my weight loss will continue, but I know the longer I go without
losing the less chance there is I will reach my goal. I guess the only
thing we can do is to do all those things we are suppose to be doing,
water, exercise, and protein. All of which I do. Good luck.

You sound exactly like me! I stopped losing at 8 months out. I am betting
you were also a relative "lightweight" before surgery. I supect
it is harder for us to reach our goal for some reason. I am now 27 months
out. What I discovered, after doing all the protein shakes, drinking enough
water to float a boat, and exercising every day, is that I had to figure
out what worked FOR ME! I had mybasal metabolic rate tested, did food
journals - you name it, I tried it!I've lost 15 lbs since the end of
October. For me, I just have to cut calories to a maximum of 1200 a day to
lose. The difference now is that I am looking at losing about 30 more lbs,
not 110 lbs! And, I have the rest of my life to do it!I work out at least 3
times per week - have built muscle with weights and do at least 1/2 hour of
cardio. I also walk our big dog about an hour almost very night (trade off
with my son or husband if I have something else going on!). I drink when I
am thirsty, I eat regular food, remembering to get the protein in first. I
try to avoid "bad carbs". In essence - I try to eat and live like
a normal person, and it seems to be working - for me.

Only 80 lbs in 8 mohths? Well that is a success and you sure could not do
that without surgery. Look at it as a positive. It sounds like you are
comparing your weight loss to others here and you can't do that. Take a
look at what you are eating. I keep a food, water and exercise journal.
Sometimes when weight loss slows down or stops you are not following the
plan your surgeon gave you or eating things you should not or grazing. The
journal helps me keep my focus because my perception of what I am eating is
not always what it actually is. If you are really concerned about not
losing also, I would suggest that you talk to your surgeon maybe there is
another reason. I wish you all the best.

Please do not compare your weight lose with others that you may see on this
site. Everyone is different and we will lose at different rates then
others. Some will lose huge amounts of weight and others will not. This
should have been explained before your surgery. Couple of things you need
to look at. Are you following the diet? Are you exercising? Write down
what you are eating? You may need to up the exerisie. Do something
different. Are you drinkin the water? Keep a log of your exercise and
eating. See if some old habits have come in. Don't think by eating less
this will help because it will not. Read this site concerning platues.
Must important do not give up and don't play mind games with yourself. Go
on with your life. You have lost 80 lbs. Would you have don this without
the surgery. If you thought this surgery was a quick fix it is not.

Tell us a little about your surgery. Open or lap? And your eating,
supplement regimen?
