Question:
Where are you shopping since you've had WLS?

I had my surgery, the LAP RNY September 3, 2002 (about 15 months or so ago and I must say, I'm absolutely AMAZED the way my clothes are fitting now. I buy a few things brand new (designer brands) IF, they are REALLY ON SALE...otherwise, I've been hitting these thrift and consignment shops!! Just like brand new!! Makes me feel like I'm RICH. They say "fake it, until you make it", and I'm headed in that direction, especially since the WLS has seemingly made an impression on my peers at work. I have another position now that requires I dress like a corporate executive...AAAhhh, how sweet it is to dream! ANyone else go "thrifting"? Some folks I know in my area pretend they don't, but have been caught in some of the same stores I go to. I went to one thrift store and took $100...didn't I come outta there with shoes (Etienne Aigner, mind you) that cost me only $1.99!!! Twelve 100% silk blouses (Gloria Vanderbilt, Worthington, Morgan Taylor) for $8; suits (two-piece) by Albert Nipon, Kasper, etc. for $4.99 each!!! I LOVE IT!! It's like when riding around through the neighborhood, like radar or a magnet "guides" me right to where the yard sales are....have you experienced this?    — yourdivaness (posted on January 6, 2004)

I have been changing sizes so fast that i have been hitting the local Goodwill. Yep, I've seen some really rich folks in there too. Even the rich like great bargins.

No doubt....these places are my saving grace right now. I go on a regular basis! You can really save a lot of money by going to the thrift stores. It is a bit more time consuming, but the quality of goods that you leave with are totally worth it. You have to have a certain level of patience...I have friends who just can't handle it....but they are always so pumped when I turn up with things that i find for them. Keep it up!! I have this whole thing down to a science......You go girl!!!!!

The thrill of the hunt for a good bargain is my greatest pleasure nowadays!!!! If it costs less than $20, it's fair game. I do a lot of shopping at Macys and Lord and Taylor and will only splurge on a rare item. Love those 65% plus an extra 15% sale racks. I do also check the Gap and Old Navy for casual stuff but I am not loving Old Navy lately. Check their websites for the sales. Good deals can be found there. As for thrift and consignment shops, I haven't had much luck there. I have stopped in a few near the support group meetings I go to, but nothing much has struck me there. I'd love it if there were more of the thrift type stores near my home.

Remember if you go to a consignment shop to take your outgrown "large" clothes with you to sell. I make money then I turn around and spend it. I like the Jones Store sale rack. I don't like OLD NAVY anymore and the Gap is a little young for me (50) I browse Goodwill and find some nice blazers & suits.

YES! Most of the party dresses you see on my site were $25 or less, some new, with tags! The problem for me was that I became ADDICTED to it. At first it was just trying to fill out a wardrobe. Then, the thrill of the hunt settled in. I musta bought 30 pairs of jeans over a year or so. Maybe more. Lost track at $1-2/pair. Once nice thing is that I haven't HAD to buy much since. LOL! When I realized that my thrift day was the highlight of my week, I knew I had to stop. So, I did, cold turkey. I could go on and on about the great deals I got, gorgeous Pendleton blazer for $2.50, fabulous full length wool gabardine rain coat for $1 in perfect shape, camel full length coat for $15 (that's over my $10 per item limit). LOTS of silk items for .25 or .59. Oh yeah, Been there, done WAY too much of it to be healthy. LOL!

If it weren't for the yard sales and consignment shops I would be naked. It is nice that you can get nice clothes at a reasonable price, especially since I have been changing sizes so quickly. It's hard for me to keep up with my size almost from one day to the next sometimes. Before Christmas I was wearing an 8, now I am in a size 4 in jeans. My upper body is a small to medium. I am still considered overweight for my height. I have lost a shoe size since my surgery and I found all my shoes rummaging through these places. It does get addicting though. There is nothing like a bargain. Janice

HAHA...I have to agree with Janice- if it were not for yard sales/thrift stores, I would have went naked this past year- Or I would have been wearing a belt with some REALLY big pants...Ok- I'm here to BRAG (lol) Before surgery- I paid $50 for a pair of jeans- $28 for a cheap T-Shirt $6.00 for a pair of underwear, $100 for a bathingsuit (all size 4X) I was getting RIPPED off grrrrrrrrrrr..doesn't it make you MAD. Now, when I go out, my plan my thrift store stops along the way- Here are some of my rescent finds...1) Size 12 pair of Gap button fly jeans .75 Cents 2) Stunning alpaca aztec design hooded sweater $4.00 sz Large 3) 3 NEW victoria Secrets bras from Ebay $23.00 (retail $45 EACH) 4)Embroidered Mickey Mouse Disney world Shirt size Large $1.00 5) Black GIORGIO ARMANI black sweater $3.00 (someone had to pay $300 for this retail) 6)Gorgeous Thick white Terry cloth Robe sz Large $2.00 7) Levi Button Fly jeans boot cup size 14 $1.50 This is just in the PAST WEEK LOL...gotta LOVE it (oh and my son a pair of winter boots for .50 cents - In my profile, I am wearing a size 14 Long velvet Liz Claiborne Fully lined dress size 14...Paid $3.00 for it- NO ONE would EVER know I got these things at thrift stores- I look at it this way- the only place I maybe could afford to shop is Walmart, so why pay $9.99 for a T-shirt when I can wear things Like Gap, Liz Claiborne, Levi's, Armani for what it would cost for a bottle of soda LOL......I'll let someone else shell out the big bucks..and what I end up paying..is about what they paid for the TAX on the item ROFL...you GO girl !

Since I have lost my weight I have only paid full price for one pair of black dress slacks. All my clothes I have gotten at Wal-Mart, Kmart, or Meiers stores, which were on clearance most costing 3 to 5 dollars. I love going to yard sales sometimes I can get a real bargain for just a dollar or two. I also go to goodwill and have picked up 4 beautiful very nice dresses for church when they have a $1.00 for the << color ticket day >>. Two of the dresses have Sears tags on them and are in excellent almost new condition. What makes it more beautiful is that they are size 8 and 10. I love it >>> I love it.

OMG!! I am the queen of consignment shops!! In my area we have some very nice ones and I have them all scoped out. I try to hit all of them at least once a month, and I, too, love the designer brands. They are just made better, and fit well. Its at the point now that when I go to a normal clothing store and see these designer fashions at their original prices (like Ann Taylor, Jones New York, Talbots etc), I refuse to buy them and my eyes widen with sticker shock and all I can think is hmmmm, this $300 suit would be $40 dollars at my fav consignment store. The drawback: obviously less selection in a consignment shop...as far as thrift stores, I don't visit them (though I did on the way down), because the consignment stores only put out very good clothing in perfect shape, and I have found in thrift store, lots of junk-worn clothing, holes, buttons missing etc...Suzy C and I often pair up to do the consignment shops together and luckily we have different tastes/color choices when shopping!

Before my TT and reaching goal... I used to shop at thrift stores, consignment shops... EBAY and clearance sales anyplace that had them.. mostly Marshalls, Ross and TJ MAXX and an occasional department store. I had a lot of trouble paying full price for things I couldn't wear but for one season... now, I still shop in those places, but I've added some.. I do the outlet thing.. hopefully about twice a year.. just did it this year... spent money at Chicos, and Off Fifth Avenue.. and Guess... among others.. I would not, however, pay full price for stuff.. I've always been a bargain shopper and will continue that. I also still love the ebay and thrift shopping.. bargain hunting is a fav past time... its nice though, to walk in almost anywhere and know that I could find something to fit... and because of that.. I paid a bit too much for some BCBG/Max Azaria pants in the Off Fifth outlet.. but you know what.. they're really cute!
