Question:
What's wrong with me? my hands and feet are cold

are cold that it means I anemic??? I've never been anemic other than when I was pregnant and there is most certainly NO WAY I'm pregnant now. I sometimes sleep in my gloves and lately, even when it's hot, I sleep in winter socks because my feet are so ccccoold. What's wrong with me? HELP!!    — yourdivaness (posted on June 9, 2003)

I am unsure of your age, but I just hit the big five oh last Friday and I am having it because of a female situation. Your question made me laugh, I too have the same problem but I have had it ever since I hit menopause which is now 2 years ago. I am worse when I am at work in the air conditioning. I did some research on the net and cold hands and feet are a symptom of menopause I was on an HRT and it helped a little bit, but that gave me bleeding every 2 wks, so I told my GNY that I was not going to take it anymore, I will live with the cold hands. My hands were so cold last week at work that I went outside to my car and got my mitten/gloves. LOL. But, I have been overall cold every since I had my open RNY back on May 7th, 2003. So, I do not know if what you are experiencing is the same as what I am, but that may be an explaination for you.

When you stick them in warm water, say dishwater. Can you SEE the color return to the fingertips? Do the tips go numb or just the hands/feet are cold. I'd check myself, but looks like the construction is so bad around Atlanta we'll not pas that close. You gonna bring 'em to me to look at? ?!?!?!

I don't think it is anything major. Lots of people don't know this but if your diet lacks protein than that can be a reason you are cold all the time. Try to get more protein in and see if that helps.

I had the coldest nose directly after my surgey. It lasted for over 6 weeks. My labs are perfect and I get in all my protein. For the first time in my life I am NOT border line anemic. Woohoo! I think it had to do with the anesthesia (Open RNY 10/30/02). I hear it (anesthesia) likes to settle in all those 'wonderful' fat cells! Takes a while to get it out of our system. Now with 158 lbs gone, I get colder easier. Go for a nice walk. Gets the blood circulating and nothing warms you up as nicely!

There are a few different reasons this could be happening. One is simply because you've lost your body fat, which acts as an insulator. Second, it could be a circulation problem. As always, get it checked out by a doctor. But from experience, I've learned that most of us lose weight and freeze year round! My husband thinks I'm crazy because I sleep year round in long pajamas, long sleeved shirt, and keep my heated mattress pad on high, even when it's 90 degrees outside! Brrrrrrrr! On the up-side, summer is much more enjoyable to me because I no longer sweat and feel miserable when it's really hot. Good luck to you!
