Question:
What was the surgeon's fee?(his/her portion only)

If your surgeon is in a city of 250,000 or more and has at least 5 years experience doing OPEN RNY, then my question is for you. How much did your surgeon charge you or your insurance for his/her fee? Not including hospital charges, meds, assistants, etc. Just the surgeons fee. You don't have to mention the surgeons name if you don't want to but please include the city. A short answer is fine. Thanks in advance. :)    — mary ann T. (posted on February 5, 2003)

Dr. JK Champion in Atlanta charged $6600 for surgeon's fees. I believe that is still close to the current going rate.

My doctor in Rochester, NY (sorry, not from there so I'm not sure of its population), Dr. William O'Malley, charges only $2,000 for his protion of the fees. My total bill for a lap RNY was under $10,000 (less if it had been done open). I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to recommend him, he's done over 800 RNYs, and has had 'only' one fatality (a woman who developed a post-op infection but, sadly, tried to treat it herself). I haven't vomitted once in the 6.5 weeks since the surgery and I'm down 30#. :)
