Question:
Does anyone have a problem staying hydrated while working out?

Does anyone experience difficulty trying to keep up with fluid intake as activites increase? Yesterday I went biking on a long bike ride (granted conditions were far from ideal - 86 degrees and humid)I was drinking water while I was biking, but obviously cannot "down" the water like I used to---- needless to say I think I suffered heat exhaustion --- I got to the point where I stopped sweating and got the chills over my entire body. My face was very flushed. It was a pretty scary experience, to have the chills and be cold in almost 90 degree weather. I don't plan to stop biking just because of the surgery--- I want to enjoy all of these physical activities now and get into better shape than I've ever been in. Has any one else experienced this? Any ideas on how to stay hydrated to avoid this from happening again? I've tried the "little bits" more often approach and I am constantly thirsty. -- I've noticed this while out doing yard work. Help?!!!!    — mam352001 (posted on June 10, 2002)

yes, I have noticed a problem staying hydrated. I had surgery 4/8/02 (am 9 weeks post) I really have to make a seriously consious effort to drink more often. I am the one who just asked the question about the camelbak hydration system and waiting for some feedback on that. Maybe something like that would work for you too? Especially while biking, I would think it would be great...the only problem I see is drinking out of a straw type thing...and I'll have to see what others say about my post before I would know how that would affect us. Take care and good luck.

I use the "Camelback" water system, 72oz of water that I add ice to keep water cold enough for me to drink without getting sick to the tummy, I ride a tandem bike and it has been wonderful, camelbacks are expensive but sure has been the answer especially early post-op when I could only sip. The other thing I do is drink prior to ride, it seems to really help to be already hydrated, and drink before I need a big gulp.
