Question:
will the doc. prescribe something for my nerves the morning of surgery??

i'm still a couple of months away from open rny surgery, and even now i occasionally get butterflies in my stomach thinking of the morning "of". Does the doctor automatically prescribe anything to calm your nerves before going to the holding room, or do you need to ask? i'm so afraid i'll have the dry heaves going in........    — [Anonymous] (posted on February 16, 2002)

Hi, It never hurts to ask, just to make sure. I was all the way in the OR and backed out of the stomach stapling (20 years ago). After relating this story to my RNY surgeon,I got a shot of Vistaril before going to the holding area.I think he wanted to make sure I would be in the OR when he got there!! It was just enough to take the edge off but the main function of this drug is to dry secretions so it also dries your mouth. Good luck. Diane

I would suggest dealing with this problem with your Primary Care Physician prior to your surgery. Have him prescribe something for you if needed, and check with the surgeon if and when you can take it. You are normally not permitted to have anything by mouth from midnight until your surgery time.

Forget about dry heaves, you may be more worried about the runny bowels from the bowel cleanser (LOL -- I did it the night before and by an hour before surgery was still going to the bathroom... the nurse said if I had an "accident" in OR, they'd clean it and me up and never even tell me)....anyway, they asked me how nervous I was and if I had said anywhere close to 10 (scale of 1 to 10) they would've injected me with something. Good luck and God Bless!

On the morning of surgery, the nurses who were "prepping" me asked if I wanted anything for my nerves. I passed, as I was eerily calm. Even the nurses in the O.R. commented on how I could be so calm and alert. They were shocked when they learned I didn't take the "calming drugs". Apparently most people jump at the chance to dope up. Hopefully you will get the chance and I say take it. Good Luck.
