Question:
is it OK for a Roux-en-Y bypass patient to have a health screening colonoscopy .

I am 50 years old and my PCP wants me to have a colonoscopy due to age related development of polyps and cancer in my age group. I also had uterine cancer two years ago which increases my risk. Can a Rouex-en-Y bypass patient have a colonoscopy or is it dangerous ?    — Linda M. (posted on February 14, 2002)

To be absolutely sure, ask your Surgeon. But, IMHO, I would think a colonoscopy is not going to come any where near your bypass. The scope only looks at the large intestine and rectum. Now, on the other hand---I would stay away from a pandenoscopy unless the GI Doctor doing it knew all about the RNY. Good for you for being pro-active in your health care. Diane

We've both had them and in theory, the WLS never touched the colon. The bowel PREP might have to be adjusted for you, though. No way can I drink a gallon of anything in a short time period. My bariatric doc did the c-scope and his prep for us is only 8 oz, but twice. So, not a pouch-buster. Still not a good time, but not painful.
