Question:
Do I stay in an unhappy job for my surgery?
I got pulled into a meeting today informing me that one of the ladies in our department is transferring to another, and it will now be my obligation, along with another to split her work. This includes doing "billing" from 2-5. I will not be receiving a pay raise, just more stress. I have been getting so sick, and have missed a lot of work, so now they are angry with me. We are swtiching from Pac Care PPO to Blue Cross starting March 1. Currently Pacific Care has made it clear, they do not want to approve me. I have an oppertunity to find a new job, nort sure with which ins, though. Here is my question: Should I take this oppertunity to quit, or stay for the ins. ?? — [Anonymous] (posted on February 20, 2002)

If you stay with the company you may have a little more stress but you will
be able to take leave for your surgery since you are already established
there. After your surgery you can start looking for a new position. If
you have already seen the surgeon they can just change the date and
insurance co. address on the paperwork and send it in. Which will shorten
your wait time for a surgery date. That's what happened to me and I was
approved in 7 days. Good luck

I agree with Samantha. Stick it out until you get your surgery. Then you
can find a new and better job and with your new image of yourself you can
start a whole new wonderful life! Good Luck.

I know it must seem endless but stick it out. You have to decide that you
really want this surgery and don't let anyone stand in your way, especially
a bad job. Plus, I'm not sure where you live but I know in NYC and Austin
finding a new job isn't that easy right now. Another great thing is once
you lose weight and have more energy, look healthier and feel better about
yourself you will be able to attract a better job. Hang in there, I'm sure
it is hard.

Hi, I am also in the same boat. I am only keeping my job because of my
insurance and FMLA. I thought about finding a new job late last year but I
know my ins will pay for surgery, I have a huge Medical spending account
that I contribute to and I definitely qualify for 12 weeks of leave. I
also took the short-term disability benefit in case something went wrong
and I needed more that 2-3 weeks off due to my health. I'm sticking it out
until the end of summer and then we'll see! Good luck!

I hear you sister. We had about 5 employees leave and they have split their
work up among 2 of us - I got the larger part of the load. No raise, no
hope of a raise, nada. I used to be the "fair haired one" around
here but since they found out I'm having the surgery I've suddenly become
the "red headed step child". I changed insurance during open
enrollment at the first of the year to a policy that was much more
expensive in the long run but didn't have an exclusion. Not to worry
though, once I'm done and well I'm coming back just long enough to keep a
paycheck until I find something else then adios. It's hard to keep my
mouth shut during this but I'm tough and nothing is more important to me at
this time than having that surgery. Nothing will stop me - especially
uncaring employers.

ABSOLUTELY STAY WITH IT!! Sometimes the devil you know is better than the
devil you don;t know. recover from your surgery, lose 30lbs, and then
decide, "I"m OUTTA here!" good luck/

I stayed at a job I did not like, got my ins. approval, scheduled my
surgery for the first available date. Took off 8 weeks to recovery,
returned to work and 2 weeks later gave my notice. They weren't too happy,
but I was. I now am skinny with a great new job. Stick with it and do
whatever it takes to get your surgery. It is all worth it.

I definetly stayed with my company being very very unhappy with new
management for several months to get my surgery. I would be very leary of
BC/BS if it is not with an HMO. I have heard of alot of people , including
my sister who are having issues with getting approval through them because
of contract exclusions. I was with Freestate and than had to change even
after I had approval with them to Cepital Care which are both HMO's through
BS/BS. I stayed with the company I was with for several months after I
decided to to leave because I had an objective, to get my surgery. Feel
free to email me [email protected] if you'd like to chat.

I would definately stay with it! Think of it this way, you have insurance
now and are getting a new company with a new chance of being approved. Why
risk the chance of not finding another job right away or worse, finding a
job and having to wait 30, 60, 90 days later to qualify for their
insurance. Sometimes the wait is longer than that. I would at stick it
out to see what BCBS says. After all, I have BCBS and after only 3 days
having my paperwork they made the final decision.... APPROVED. They aren't
all bad. I think it depends a lot what state you live in. Good luck!
