Question:
I am confused about whether or not it is best to have your stomach transected?
When I had my consult with my surgeon, I remember him telling me that he is willing to transect the stomach as long as I understand the increased risks. He explained the risks to me, and at the time I thought it best NOT to transect. Since that time, I have been researching this more carefully and it sounds like it is better to transect. Could you guys please explain the pro's and con's of each for me? My surgery is on Jan 12,2001, so I need to know for sure which is the best option for me. — Nikki (. (posted on December 30, 2000)

I'm SOOOOOO biased on this, but I spose you want bias, too. There is some
immediate post-op risk with transection, as there is with any part of RNY.
But long term, if you don't want to have to think about staple line
disruption, TRANSECT. If you don't want every extra bite you take to be
questioned in your mind, TRANSECT. If you don't want to reach goal wt and
watch it taken away from you, TRANSECT. AS it is, we have enough questions
marks for life. You may get a good post-op plan, you may not. You may find
out 3 yrs down the road that nope, this plan was not enough. But if you
don't want to live with perpetual doubt about the integrity of your staple
line, TRANSECT. I'm not sure which was worse, livng with the fear of it,
or when it finally happened and I had to face another sugery, including
battle with ins co. Now, we wait for my husband's staple line to disrupt.
And hope we have the right insurance when it goes. Our doc has been
transecting since 1996, but we are 1994 & 1995 models. Mine is revised
now, but his is still intact. Mine didn't disrupt til the 5th year.
Normally, there isn't pain when they go, but I had LOTS of discomfort,
nausea, burning (acid). So, there's a vote FOR transection.
