Question:
Which protein do all of you use?
I have seen soy, whey, vege and eggs & milk protein. I am sure there are more types. Which kind do you all use and why. Are some famous for not being tolerated after rny? Has anyone ordered all the protein powder samples from Vitalady and if yes, which did you like the best. Do her products take into account that carbs can not really be too high? How many carbs per serving is reasonable for protein supplements? Know anything about protein spray? Need details. Enough questions for now. Thanks in advance-Jessica — Jessica D. Since you're still pre-op, definitely get some samples so that you can have
something that you like prior to surgery. For me personally, I prefer the
whey proteins (designer protein, specifically.) Soy is too gritty and
anything w/ eggs and milk products (w/o the lactose being reduced) give me
horrible gas pains. Good luck!

Well, is it OK if I answer? Ideally, we want abotu 30g of protein per
serving, much more is a waste. And we want it to have less than 6g of
sugars. Total carbs are not as critical because we don't absorb them all
the same way. But yes, all ours are low in carbs/fat/calories. We're in
this to get as healthy as possible and that often means with as little body
fat aboard as is possible with normal exercise and eating. So, we go for
high protein in a small volume (4 oz of liquid or so, to taste), some have
0g of sugar, and low calories overall. This way also doesn't stretch our
pouch. We want our pouch to stay as close to "surgery day size"
as possible until we reach goal wt. Watch the different models for sugar g
as it can make us gassy. Soy is a good protein source, but not as
bioavialable as whey. It can be gritty & irritating to the bowel, as
well. But it IS cheap. Milk is WAY too high in sugar, too low in
absorbable protein.

Hi Jessica--I am 3 weeks post op today from proximal open rny. Before
surgery, I ordered a bunch of protein supplements form Michelle Curran at
vitalady. they were all the whey varity (proscore-100, problend55, ultra
pure pro)all tasted good to me. After surgery, they all made me sick!
Upset stomach and heartburn while drinking, gas and diarrhea
after. Tried boost and carnation instant, well too high in sugar, vita4life
protein I could handle but very foul and
nasty. I backed off for awhile, and now I am happy to report that I can
handle the extreme purepro if I mix it with no sugar added cranberry juice.
It is higher in calories this way but it is the only way I can handle it.
this gives me 26 grams protein/260 calories. I do one a day as I am on
pureed food now and make sure I eat just about all protein food. I am
geeting 65-75 grams of protein between the drinking and food. I have lost
40 lbs in 3 weeks, so I must be doing OK. Later I will try it with water
and see if I can handle it that way. things change with our pouch as time
progresses. I recommend vitalady for all your needs.

I use Universal Whey protein and I really like it. I get it from
www.bodybuilders.com its made by Dymatize. It has no sugars, 37 grams of
protein per serving. It comes in lots of flavors and its inexpensive
compared to the other tubs I have seen.

I ordered the samples from Michelle, and suggest you do the same. You
don't want to get stuck with a $30 can of something you hate the taste of
or can't tolerate. I don't remember the manufacturer, but I hated the
orange creamsicle, vanilla, and berry protein samples I got from her. I
use ProScor 100, chocolate flavor. This product is a glutamine whey
protein. It tasted differently post-op, but I can handle it. It doesn't
taste like a milkshake to me, but neither does it taste horrible. Two
scoops and 8 oz of water give you 32 gm of protein. I had a proximal, and
drink one a day. Good luck to you.
