Question:
Arthritis question

Anyone develop arthritis after they lost their weight? I am 2 1/2 years p.o., down 125 lbs and have severe arthritis in my hips. Funny how this didn't bother me before. Anyone have anything similar happen to them. Someone told me Al Roker is having problems with this. Anyone hear of this?    — KellyL (posted on August 31, 2005)

Hi, yes. I've lost 207lbs and have arthritis in both hips and my lower back. Also in my right shoulder-but that doesn't bother me as much as the hips do. I have much pain at night. Just lying on my side is extremely painful-especially the left side. If I do alot of walking or standing-then it takes days for me to recouperate. :(

I haven't heard that from people I know who had the surgery... I already have arthritis in my Right Knee, Left Shoulder and Left Thumb.. But I had it in those places before I had surgery

I had it in several places BEFORE surgery. And it HAS spread out since then. :( Oh Vioxx, how I miss you dear. lol. (I have lots of Vioxx left, but have'nt used it post op because of possible pouch issues). Yes, I know they pulled it. I just suffer with the athritus as there does'nt seem to be anything out there safe for a post op.

I suspect you have had arthritis for some time but that it was without any symptoms. Now that you are more active probably exercising you are beginning to notice it. Weight loss does not cause arthritis but the years of being overweight has caused stress on the joints does cause arthritis. Staying active and strenghening the muscles around your hip joints and keeping the joint flexible will help.

Hi I had some arthritis before my surgery but it has spread to more joints and gotten a lot worse since. I have to take prednisone 5mg and pain meds daily to just survive. My feet, hands and back are severly affected, it's very hard to walk. So I am very concerned about keeping the weight off in the future. Good luck with your journey. Nut

I had ARTHRITIS in all my joints before surgery..I got off my arthritis medicine for 2 years. Now my Arthritis is back!! My Orthopaedic Specialist put me on Celebrex and it is helping..He said even though there is a lot of controversy about this drug..it is one of the safer ones for Gastric Bypass patients....

What about fosomax? Fosomax is used for extreme calcium defiency, I dont know if that would help. You can ask your doctor.
