Question:
Wondering why I am not supposed to drink tea?

I am 13 mnths post-op and had previously been drinking water and milk. Then I tried some hot tea and I loved it, if I thrown up and couldn't eat anything, tea would setel my stomach. Then I read on one of the Q&A that you should not drink hot tea. I was wondering why I am not supposed to drink tea.    — Maria H. (posted on August 25, 2004)

No more than 'two' is ok. The reason is the caffeine in coffe/tea hinder vitamin absorbtion of iron/calcium - which we NEED

The tannic acid in the tea may be upsetting your stomach. Remember that the acid level in your new stomach is so much lower. Try herbal? I have always gotten an upset stomach from regular tea. Just a thought. My written instructions from my surgeon suggest mint tea in event of a tummy upset, and it works, relaxing the stoma and helping evacuate from your stomach whatever's bothering it.

Because Tea is a natural diuretic and also contains caffeine. Caffeine is a nono for some reason. I learned this at the seminar i attended in modesto ca.

At the nutrition class I had to do, they urged us to use herbal or decaffeniated tea if we wanted tea. Being a tea drinker, I asked why and was told caffeine interferes with some of the vitamin absorption and dehydrates you if you're not careful and get fluids up and above the 64 oz minimum.

What I found out from the nutritionist on drinking tea is it will deplete your iron stores. I was told I could drink it once in awhile but it would be better to drink herbal teas without caffiene. I miss my tea! I was a big tea drinker.

I am 13 months post op and I drink 1 cup of hot tea every morning...I also take an iron tablet every day to counter- act it. I gave up coffee and cokes and except that one cup of hot tea - all I drink the rest of the day is water. So, that is my "special" drink! Danette

The tannins in the brown liquids are also linked to kidney stone formation. An occasional cup is not bad. Sandra

the problem with tea is caffein. That acts like a diuretic so you need even more fluids. Decaffeinated is fine....sharon
