Question:
Can I benefit from unflavored protein stirred into my coffee?
I am trying very hard to get in plenty of protein. The other day I mixed unflavored protein powder in my morning coffee (not super hot coffee, just comfortably warm). It tasted fine and I thought of it as creamer. Will I get the benefit of the protein grams or does the protein break down in hot liquid? If I'm just adding calories to my coffee, I don't want to continue with that! It is the "All the Whey" protein powder, by the way. Thanks!! — Carly H. (posted on July 5, 2004)

I don't think the protein breaks down in warm liquid, but I never had great
luck with it dissolving. I mix mine in iced coffee. I take a scoop (or
2) with some instant coffee and sweet and low in a sports bottle, and add
cold water. I have a water cooler at home or you can keep it refrigerated.
I then add skim milk and cover and shake. It mixes very well.

I know ProCel delivers a full load in warm beverages, and that the flavored
ones experience a slight decline. Don't know Any Whey, but I suspect it is
ok warm. Never heat the protein, but adding it to "coffee pot
hot" things seems to be ok.

My nutritionist suggested that I mixed unflavored protein powder in any
food or drink - so I think you'll be just fine. However, I was told not to
drink caffeine after WLS, - you did not say your coffee was decaf, but I
have read other post-ops who are coffee drinkers. GOOD LUCK
