Question:
Dr. considering removing my old stomach....
I'm 1 1/2 years post op (down 160 and have reached my goal!!!). In Oct 2002 my dr. found that a fistula (tube) had formed linking my old stomach to my pouch. I had revision surger to re-staple my pouch. My doc said that if I had anymore problems he'd consider removing my old stomach. I'm still having a lot of pain that is probably caused by acid and bile from my old stomach. Has anyone ever had their old stomach removed? What are the risks/side affects? Any help would be appreciated as I'm really scared.... — Angela L. (posted on February 20, 2003)

Congrats on reaching your goal :0) have you tried prevacid, prilosec (sp)
nexium, or any proton pump inhibator, to help stop the production of acid,
or any other drug? I hope you can find the answer. :0)

I had SLD at 5 yrs. I chose to have my lower stomach removed because I had
a 30 yr history of ulcer. Figured if my body had worked that hard to
"fix itself", it woudl not hesitate to form a fistula. Did not
want an ulcer in the lower stomach, either. Took some begging, but when I
could prove a duodenal ulcer pre-op, it was a done deal. Never missed it.
Have not had marginal ulcer since. Have a wider selection of foods, too?
Weird, as they didn't rebuild the stoma. But I suspect I had a silght
compromise in the staple line, which allowed just a bit of acid to come
back uphil and make everything taste........ odd. I am OH SO GLAD that I
did it!

they dont generally remove your ld stomach in the RNY because it continues
to produce gastric juices. I would get it transected as I think all of them
should be.
