Question:
How often & what blood tests should I expect post-op?
I'm 6 weeks post-op today and forgot to ask the doctor yesterday when and what kind of blood tests I should be getting. I'm not scheduled to see him again for another month. I would appreciate input from others as to what they have had to do. Thanks! — georgiacarol (posted on October 12, 2000)

My surgeon requires a large set of blood tests every three months during my
first year post-op, then once a year after that. I go to my local hospital
lab to have them done, and have the results sent to my surgeon since he is
300 miles away. The tests add up to 700 to 800 dollars each time. They
include a complete blood count series, triglycerides, cholesterol, protein
& Albumin, Glucose, Nine measures of liver function, Three
electrolytes, Minerals including calcium, magnesium, Phosphorus, and Iron,
and vitamins including Folate and B-12. Different surgeons have different
ideas about what blood tests are important and when they should be done.

At 6 months, my surgeon ordered a CBC (complete blood count) and Iron
profile. At 12 months, he will check B12.
