Question:
Does soy slow down weight loss?
I read in today's Q and A board that soy based foods can slow down weight loss by interfering with thyroid function. HELP...I drink 3-4 Carb Solution shakes (soy based) a day and have noticed dramatic slowing in my weight loss. I thought it was because I'm a year out from surgery. I'm walking 1 1/2 -2 miles a day and getting about 64 ounces of fluids daily. Could this amount of soy be causing a problem? — Donna H. (posted on March 19, 2004)

I've never heard of such a thing. Soy protien is great for you, especially
for women.

It is great for women, especially menopausal ladies. But, once i
accidently bought a soy protein powder for my shakes and my sugeon and
nutritionist told me to use it so I wouldn't waste my money but not to make
that mistake again. It was exactly the same EAS that i had been using. I
mean the same color container that the Whey protein was in. It said soy
and i didn't notice it. I did read the label after I got home and saw it
has way more calories than whey, more carbs and more sugars. BTW, I like
carb soultions. I didn't know it was soy. Maybe that is why i stopped
losing weight drinking those things. I assumed it was from the milk I was
using to mix them.

Unless you have a problem with your endocrine system I surely can't see why
soy would slow your weight loss down. It CAN mess up your glands (thyroid,
adrenal, etc.) but usually it contributes to an already existing problem.
I've read reports that it CAN exacerbate the existing, but no conclusive
proof that it can cause a problem without one already existing...clear as
mud, huh? Do you have any problems with your thyroid? If you haven't been
tested in a couple of years, it might not be a bad idea to see where your
T3 and T4 levels are! Good luck!
