Question:
Help protein causes pain
I am four weeks out from my surgery and so far the only protein source that does not hurt my stomach and intestines, ie. cause cramping and aching, is protein popsicles from Wholefoods. These only have 11 grams per popsicle. Did anyone else have this issue? Starch based foods, fruit juice, water, tea, etc. None of these cause any cramping, but lactaid, soy poweder, and protein drinks like met rx, atkins, glucerna, liquid protein, yogurt, etc. all cause cramping. Any suggestions?, b/c I really think it's the protein not the items I am trying. — J C. (posted on September 7, 2003)

Where do you feel pain? How long after eating/drink? Nausea? Diarrhea? How
long after th epain kicks in? I didn't see any good proteins listed in your
list. You've certainly worked diligently to try, though. I would avoid
milk completely, including lactaid. Was the Met-Rx in a packet, listed
anywhere as an MRP? The canned grocery drinks, (Ensure/Glucerna) are either
too high in sugar or still milk based. So, just as you fix one problem, you
kick in another. I can see your frustration. There ARE products out there
that are not milk based, that do mix up with water, and are way cheaper to
use than anything you've tried. Believe it or not, since you are whipped
from trying. There are literally hundreds in the little pocket of
resources you've missed.
