Question:
tubes cut during the wls? anyone consider it or heard of it?
hi everyone. just a question relating to birthcontrol issues. Has anyone ever heard of or considered for themselves getting their tubes cut and tied or whatever during the same time they under went their wls surgery? I thought it would be cool since they already have you open and are probably removing your gall bladder also why not do the tubes.? — shari B. (posted on July 29, 2003)

If you need it done or want it done - ASK. My doctor does these things if
'requested'. In fact, he removed an ovarian cyst when he did my open RNY
(which I didnt even know I had)

My doctor said he would have let a ob/gyn come in and do that if I arranged
it. He said it wouldn't be the first time. :) I opted against it due to
financial reasons, but apparently it's not all that uncommon.

I asked my dr. the same question and he said it would be better if I had
the WLS and lost the weight and then had my tubes tied by Lap. he didn't
like the idea of having me under longed then needed, and didn't want to
make the scare any bigger, since I had open RNY.

I had to laugh because I thought the very same thing - why not 2 for 1
(LOL). When I asked my doctor, he said that no, he would not allow 2
proceedures at the same time. His concerns include the extended time under
anesthesia but more importantly, if there are complications, he will KNOW
that it is the result of the WLS and look to correct the complication there
and not have to wonder is it WLS or the tubes. Have to admit - I was
bummed.
However, I have just learned about another method of getting your
"tubes tied". You can read about it at www.essure.com. Inserts
placed in each of the tube using your "natural pathways" (no
cutting involved), and the tubes occlude over 3 months and close. Success
rates (i.e., not getting pregnant) are higher than having your tubes tied.
Check it out - I may have it before my surgery (WLS date is 12/1/03). Good
Luck.

This is funny - I asked my surgeon in my pre-op counseltation if they could
do a tubal ligation at the same time I was having WLS. I was told no, they
would be a little far "north" of my tubes. Be that as it may, it
also occurred to me later that my surgery was being performed in a Catholic
hospital, where I doubt they would perform elective sterilizations (but
might not come right out and say that when I asked).
