Question:
The doctor today said I had to be on the c-pap for 2 weeks prior to him giving the ok
to the surgeon for surgery. The settings are at 8 & 5. Said also that the surgery probably would not correct the sleep apnea. Family doctor says just the opposite, that it would correct it. Can someone help me here, I am confused and getting anxious. — Sharon L. (posted on May 17, 2002)

Well, I guess technically the surgery does not cure sleep apnea, but the
weight loss does. I'm not sure if that is what your doctor means. I had
very severe sleep apnea prior to surgery and aftre losing apx. 25 pounds I
was sleeping 100% better.

Your lucky my surgeon said I had to be on it for 6 weeks. Do you feel
better since on your cpap though? I have only had mine for a week and I am
on 11%?

I work for a sleep center and from what I have been told is that there is
no surgery to cure sleep apnea but the weight loss will help. If you have
a lot of questions regarding your CPAP settings prior to and after surgery
you should see a board certified sleep specialist and they would be able to
answer your questions for you with knowing your history and your degree of
sleep apnea.

My doctor wants me on the CPAP 3 weeks prior to recondition my breathing
processes to better recover from the anesthesia. Persons with sleep apnea
sometimes struggle to recover after the surgery.
Also, the surgery itself will not correct the sleep apnea, but the
resulting weight loss eventually will.
