Question:
Have you ever awoken with severe stomach acid?
About an hour after I went to sleep tonight, I awoke almost choking on stomach acid...the acid even rose up into my throat. (Of course this scared me since I have never even had a slight case of heartburn since the surgery) I am wondering if I should call my doctor tommorrow...I drank water and ate some Tums, but it scared me. I am still coughing from the acid going into my throat and chest. Is this unusual? What could cause it? Thanks for your help! — [Anonymous] (posted on February 4, 2002)

What kind of surgery did you have & when? Normally, we do not have
reflux after RNY unless something is a little skewed somewhere.

I am 45 days pre op and am looking forward to ending the problem you are
talking about. This severe type of acid reflux has been happening to me
for 4 months now...at night (just like you) and I feel just as you
described. Even thought I would die from inhaling acid. The doctor put me
on prevacid and told me that the surgery should clear it up and then I
could stop the medicine. I am having the BPD, so I don't know if this is
the same as what you had (surgery wise) but my understanding is that all of
these surgeries should stop the gurds or acid reflux syndrom. If you are
having now, post op, I would call the doctor...it could be you need some
meds anyway, or could be a sign of something else...you should definately
call the doctor though. Hope things work out for you!!
