Have you ever awoken with severe stomach acid?

About an hour after I went to sleep tonight, I awoke almost choking on stomach acid...the acid even rose up into my throat. (Of course this scared me since I have never even had a slight case of heartburn since the surgery) I am wondering if I should call my doctor tommorrow...I drank water and ate some Tums, but it scared me. I am still coughing from the acid going into my throat and chest. Is this unusual? What could cause it? Thanks for your help!
