Question:
swallowing air with each sip of water
I can not get enough water taken in because after each sip I have to wait several minutes to let the air make its way back up. The doctor said I am swallowing air. I DO NOT KNOW how NOT to do this. I must get my water in. I have been home from the hosital one day. Had open RNY proximal. Please give any ideas you have for me to change my awful habit of 'swallowing water' Lisa marie — Lisa Marie D. (posted on November 6, 2001)

I'm assuming you're not using a straw. If you are, stop. Some have the
air problem with straws. Otherwise, slow down your drinking, that may
help. Or try taking a mouthful but swallowing the mouthful a little at a
time. Any of these should help.

I am 6 weeks postop from RNY and also had a great deal of trouble with
swallowing air when I drank water. The subsequent burps were painful and
though I have always loved water I found I was drinking less and less
because of this. Contrary to the prior posts, I find it helpful to drink my
water with a straw or to drink from a water bottle and don't have the
problem now unless I go back to drinking straight from the glass.
