Question:
Why am I so tired at 6 weeks?
This last week has been very stressful to start with, but I am very tired through the day. After I'm up for about 4 hours I need a nap. I can easily sleep for 3 or 4 hours. I don't think it is the stress, because it is not on my mind anymore. I am taking all of the vitamins the doctor told me to. I had a B12 shot 3 weeks ago. I have felt really good, very happy, and optimistic since the surgery. I even have "pretty dreams". Do you think it could be post op depression, or am I tired because I'm still healing inside. I had lap RNY and my doctor told me at my 3 week check up since my wounds have healed nicely and I'm not in any pain I could start light exercising and light weight training. I feel great physically except when I eat and I get major gas pains. They go away in a few minutes. I can't figure out why I'm tired. Help. I am getting more than enough water in most days. The last 2 days have been very tough getting it in though. Any suggestions, I just feel very tired and week in the arms, kind of scatter brained at times. Maybe I'm not eating enough since I get such gas pains, I stop before I know I'm full. Any Suggestions PLEASE. Carla — Carla C. (posted on August 11, 2001)

The nurse explained to me that your body is going through an adjustment
period. I experienced that same problem at 4 monts. I could barely make it
through the work day. I was concerned that maybe I was low on some type of
vitamin. Labs were normal. They said you will go through those periods
every once in awhile. You will lose alot of weight quickly and go whoa!
what happened to me! I would definately talk with your doctor to see what
his thought is.

I was tired for about 3 months. It was an on and off thing , some days were
good some were bad. I moved at my own pace and when I was tired I slept, no
matter what time it was or how long it was. This is big ,big surgery. If
you are getting all the vitamins , iron and supplements in , then you just
need the rest.

I used to complain about being tired all the time AND sleeping all the time
when I wasn't at work ... someone told me that this is a MAJOR surgery and
to give it at least 6 months. I'm not 8 months post-op and today I FINALLY
had a burst of energy enough to clean my apartment and do errands.
Everyone is different. Good luck!

Here's another thought. Even if we are taking all the protein and vitamins
and water we should, we still are taking in few calories, especially the
first few months. Calories are the body's fuel, and it is hard to have
enough energy when we are being undernourished. We don't starve, because
our bodies tap into our fat reserves (hurray!), but we don't have a lot of
energy either. I know it slows the weight loss, but adding a few carbs
might make you feel more energetic.

Just curious. You're 6 weeks out and JUST STARTING a light exercise
program? This could be ONE reason for your being tired. As you exercise,
you're body responds with endorphins, which make you feel more energetic
and with a sense of "well-being".. Perhaps stepping up your
exercise program a little with help with your lethargy..? Just my
opinion.....
