Question:
What types of fruit can I mix with Protein drinks and wont cause Dumping?
Hello everyone. I will have a Lap Proximal Rny in 11 days! I will be on a Puree diet for some time afterwards of course. Which types of fruit can I blend up with my Protein drinks or just otherwise, that wont cause dumping from the natural sugars? Like not very ripe bananas, blueberries, oranges, watermelon, strawberries, etc? Got any ideas? Thanks a bunch, Annie — Annie R. (posted on July 29, 2001)

"Natural" sugars are not what causes the dumping syndrom.
Refined sugars are what causes problems. You should be able to try any
type of fruit, but if you think you will have a problem, try just one at a
time.

I have used bananas in my protein shake and did fine. Last week I also
started eating small amounts of watermelon and OH how wonderful it tasted!!
My surgeon recommends that we for several months that we stay away from
any fruit or veggie that has tough skins or stringy in texture....saw a
lady eating green grapes today and was craving them BAD!! May try a few to
see how I do with the skin...Good Luck, Karan

Any sugar -- including "natural" fructose (in fruit) or lacotse
(in milk) can cause dumping in some people if you take in enough. However,
the main problem with sugars isn't dumping. Eating much sugar can cause
sugar-craving, which can become a vicious cycle. Also, sugar isn't
malabsorbed, so every sugar calorie you swallow counts. Consider mixing
vanilla protein supplement in diet V-8 splash. It's made with carrot juice
and sounds icky but isn't. The tropical blend tastes just like
orange-pineapple juice but there's very little sugar to trip you up.
