Question:

I'm doing very well sinnce surgery, but I have a friend who doesn't have access to the internet and I told her I would try to find info for her. She had a VGB done summer 1999. Was constantly throwing up and had many other problems relating to malabsorption. Had the RNY procedure done December, 1999 as a means of correction. Is still getting as she describes "morning sick" for about 20 to 30 minutes after she eats EVERY TIME! (and no, she's not pregnant) Her surgeon requested an ednoscopy late February, 2000. It showed no problems with ulceration or any type blockage. In other words, every thing looked absolutely normal. My friend is already at (or past) her goal weight and continues to loose because she just hates the idea of eating. She has already been hospitalized because she was completely dehydrated. Can anyone suggest anything or has anyone else been through something similar? Thanks -    — Martha C. (posted on March 27, 2000)

Martha: Can you ask her to give me some more information like; what does she eat give me a list like for two days, don't leave out anything.. Also can you tell me her eating habits like i.e. Does she gulp her liquids or food? Wolf down meals? Does she drink or eat dairy products with every meal? Also maybe her surgeon would set her up to see a nutritionist to see just what is eating her ...no pun intended.. email me any time I would love to try and help her...

As long as they ruled out a physical problem, my doc says the main things that cause dumping after rny are eating too much, eating too fast, and/or drinking too soon before or after a meal. 30 minutes is the magic number -- it should take about 30 minutes to eat a meal; don't drink for 30 minutes before or after eating. Try smaller portions. If she's throwing up after every meal, I'm concerned that her doc isn't looking at this more aggressively. My doc wants to see anyone that has repeated vomiting in a 24 hour period. Sounds like she's had this for awhile -- its not normal, routine or OK! If she doesn't see immediate results with any of our suggestions here, I suggest she see another doctor.
