I will be 4 years post op in the beginning of September, have about 12 more
pounds to go. Try these, they have been the crux of my success...
1. Write down everything you eat even if it is something that you think is
"off limits!"
2. Measure everything you eat...if you are eating outside the home, ball
park it, but get good at making guesstimates by measuring everything you
can! In other words, know what a serving of pasta looks like, or an ounce
of cheese, or two tablespoons of dressing, and keep a running total of the
calories that you eat as you eat them (I walk around with a large calorie
counting book and a pad of paper)...you may be shocked!
3. Read all labels...if it has a lot of crap in it, don't eat it!
4. Weigh yourself every day. If you are writing down what you eat and
taking responsibility for what you put in your mouth, you will know why and
how you gained weight. Don't let a 10# weight gain turn into a 60# gain by
ignoring reality.
5. Exercise every day...30 minutes of walking will change the shape of your
body. You don't have to be out of breath, just get out and move!
6. PLAN, PLAN, PLAN what you are going to eat every day! Make a meal plan
for the week, or a day ahead and get the foods that you need to stick to
your plan!
7. Stop playing the old tapes in your head that got you to be morbidly
obese! You are successful, you can do this and you deserve to live a life
that is healthy, normal and reasonable...but you have to make it happen!!!
8. Guess what? That pouch that your surgeon told you about that is so small
and will limit your intake of food so that you will lose weight...you know
the one? It isn't the size of your thumb anymore!!! You can probably eat
much more now than you could weeks and months post-op...right? So it must
be bigger...right? Here is the my big secret (free for those reading):
THERE IS NO SECRET!!! THERE IS NO CURE ALL!!! IT IS UP TO YOU TO MAKE THE
LIFESTYLE CHANGES THAT WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL AND KEEP YOU THAT WAY
FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
9. Think of how much more successful you are today than in the past and
build on your success. It takes a while to catch up with what you look like
today, so go to the pictures of you when you were really fat and compare
how you are today vs. then. Keep the pictures with you always. Show them to
other people. This will reinforce your success!
10. Most important...the unthinkable is acheivable...just take control of
your life and know that everybody has ups and downs, it's what you choose
to do with them that will make all the difference in the world!!!

With you being 4+ years out, there is a chance your surgeon did not
transect your pouch. You need to have an endoscopy done to check out the
status of your surgery. Everyone loves to toss out the phrases "its
only a tool" and "go back to basics", but neither one of
those will ever work if you have a mechanical failure of your surgery. Get
it checked out, if its intact, then you can start re-learning how to use
your tool, but if you have a staple line disruption or an enlarged stoma,
all the dieting in the world won't help - just like before you had surgery.
Mechanical failure can be fixed with another surgery, not fun, but it can
help you get to and maintain a healthy weight.

Katrina-I am also 4 years out as of Sept 14 and I too have gained, 40
pounds to be exact. I feel your pain and frustration. We know what to do
however all those BAD habits that made us fat are back with a vengence!!
Maybe we can motivate each other, I KNOW we can do this and get back to
where we want to be. Lets try to keep in mind that we are not alone in this
and there are so many wonderful people here on this sight that helped us in
the beginning of our adventure, and can help and motivate us now. Please
contact me if you'd like.. I know I can use a friend that understand
exactly where I am on my venture..love to you..Donna

If you are still gaining, perhaps you should see your doctor and have your
thyriod checked, this is part of my problem as well and wont hurt to have
it checked just in case. Good luck

Thank you Ali M. Just reading the posts to weight gain issues on here make
me sick to my stomach. The comments some people make are so sarcastic and
have a know it all attitude. Talk to your Doctor, they have the Degree.

I had unexplained weight gain at about seven months post-op. I was
diagnosed with PCOS. You should have your doctor check your insulin and
hormone levels. (Specifically Testosterone levels) Your doctor should also
check your surgery-maybe there are mechanical failures. Good Luck and keep
doing your best :)
