Question:
What do I do for itchy, welpy incisions from tape allergy?

I had a tt/hernia repair the 17th of May and now have had an allergic reaction to the tape that was used. I have welps of about 1 inch on both sides of the icisions that go from breastbone to pubic bone to a smiley face on both sides down below. I can't stand the itching. I have 3 drains and they go across my abdomen and it is like being tickled but a painful experience. I am also having problems with what to do with the drains when I go out which I have not done yet. I need your help desperately and quickly for better relief of this horendous situation BTW I am taking benydryl and a predisone pack and they are not working.    — classydame1 (posted on May 27, 2004)

I had the same reaction when I had the RNY and suffered for about a week before I got some anti-itch cream from the drug store. It worked wonders........the relief was instant. I don't remember what is in it but I believe it has cortisone in it and maybe some benadryl. If it does have benadryl, you shouldn't use the oral and cream at the same time. Don't know about the drains. I haven't had to deal with any drains.

You can use calamine lotion to dry areas or use Neosporin Plus pain relief to numb the area and protect against infection. The Neosporin will also help the open areas heal quicker. A lot of people keep the drains inside their panties. You can also put a piece of tape around the tubing and then pin the tape to clothing. You should not use Benadryl tabs and lotion together.

Have you tried the benadryl spray or ointment? I haven't had a TT yet but I hope you feel better soon.

Try "paper tape". You can get it at all the local drug stores.

Paper Tape is the best to use if your having a reaction to tape, or you can ask for stery strips from your doc.

Hi boy do I know how you feel. I has this about a year ago and it drove me crazy. The dr suggested witch hazel, stings a little when you first put it on but feels oh so good. I used cotton balls and just patted the area that itched, you can do it as much as you like. As for the drains tuck them in your panties or pin them to your waistband. As long as you don't kink the tubing it will be fine. Please though don't over do as long as you have the drains in even if you feel really good. I had a big set back because of this, take it easy. Hope this helps and the itching will let up soon. Be sure next time to let them know that you had this reaction. Good Luck and God Bless

I am allergic to any adhesive too. especially for long periods of time. I knlw this sounds cazy, but when i had to have gluicoma surgery my face borke ou with all the tape I had to use for the eye patch. Yhe surgeon told me to use Milk of Magnesia on face (like liton) then let it dry and then place eye patch and tape. It works. It created a barrier
