Question:
how do you deal with different food can you eat it?

OK here is my question I'm 2 weeks post op on a soft food diet and the dietician said I can start trying meats have tried beef and pork and have had no problem. I am Puertorican is any one out there Hispanic? can you eat like yellow rice, beans, and all the other good stuff we cook. or do you feel alienated from it? I mean yes I like food like mash potatoes and soups and the more American foods :) What kinds of food do you eat at 2-3 and so on post op? Thank you all for answering I don't know what I would have done without Q&A.    — Maribelle C. (posted on October 22, 2003)

I'm 7 wks out and from about 4 wks on, I ate beans, avocado's, tomato's, yellow rice, cucumbers, olives, corn tortilla's.. I made all different kinds of spanish soups... I think variety is definitely the key...

Maribelle~ Congratulations on your surgery! Absolutely try beans ~ they are a perfect post op food...full of protein. I also went right to menudo and queso & chips (not too many chips). The menudo was wonderful, warm and soothing on my tummy (& the tripe is also full of protein & soft, easy to digest for me). I had a problem with rice for about the first 3 months...it just would not go down, no matter how tender it was. I have no problem with it now. So, I highly recommend trying menudo, beans, caldo, etc....Wonderful!! Enjoy!

I'm Puert RIcan and love our food, but you'd do best to stay away from the rice in the beginning. I can tolerate pretty much anything but rice just expands in my stomach making it impossible to eat anything else. I love my beans. I ate the insides of chicken burritos when I was an early post-op. Chicken, refried beans and rice. More of a Mexican dish really, but you know what I mean. I haven't tired pork or much red meat but it's more because I live in Los Angeles, the salad capital of the universe. But I do sometimes eat rice and beans for breakfast. I am talking about 1/2 cups worth. There isn't much you can't eat once you get further along post up, but I'd stay away from the fried food. And you know I love me my fried food. ;)

Trust me --- I know how you feel. I am puerto rican, too. Give it some time. You may never be able to eat the same amount of yellow rice and beans, or pork, or friend bananas that you did before. But I am 4 1/2 months post op, and I can definitely eat a little rice and beans. Every now and then, I will steal a piece of a fried banana. I can also eat pork, but make it a habit not to go overboard. It gets better.
