Question:
Has anyone fainted post op?

I am almost 7 months post op and last weekend I went to a bar with some friends. I had forgotten to eat dinner before I went. I had one drink. I was standing there conversating with friends and then I fainted. everyone thought I was drunk and passed out. After a minute, I was aware of things. I was sweating like crazy. When I tried to get up and walk again, I fainted again. After the second time I was fine within 10 minutes. This really scared me and everyone around me. I have never fainted before. Could it have been cause I didnt have any food in my stomach? thanks in advance!    — Lindy L. (posted on June 20, 2003)

This happened to me in a hotel lobby. It was because I was dehydrated. I wasn't taking care of myself due to my Dad dying. After, I drank tons of water and added salt to up the BP. It might have something to do with a drink without food also for you.

Hypoglycemia? I've heard of this happening post-op.

A few possible reasons for fainting (assuming that it's never been a problem in the past). First, depending upon what you drank, your body could have responded to the sugar in the alcohol and caused you to dump (which would explain the sweating). Secondly, you may have just been reacting to the amount of alcohol you consumed (particularly if you didn't have any food in your pouch to help absorb some of it). Thirdly, you could have been dehydrated. I've never gone out cold, but have had similar experiences--- all in all, though, I've grown to enjoy those cheap highs. [A little Q/A humor here.]

I fainted on the Train on the way to work at 10 months post op. I was dehydrated and knew it but I ignored the signs because things were hectic (sick great uncle, his wake & funeral). All I was drinking was caffeinated Tea. I've learned to up my water and switched to decaf. Yours sounds more blood sugar related but I'm not sure. Talk to your doctor.
