Question:
Now that i know to measure w/ cups instead of scale (after 1 yr-lol) how much protein

For like the first 9 months post-op I always measured my food with a scale, not measuring cups. I now realize that volume counts more, wish I realized this before lol But I'm a little confused. I still count grams of protein and calories, and 1oz of chicken is supposed to be like 35cal and 7gr. protein, but is it a 1/8 cup ounce or an ounce on the scale? I can eat 1/3 of a chicken breast (measures 1.5oz with scale) or half of a homemade 1/4lb. hamburger with slice of cheese. I'm at my goal weight and happy, i guess I just need a little reassurance to make sure I'm not eating too much. Thanks!    — Lezlie Y. (posted on May 25, 2003)

My nutritionists told me to measure meats on a food scale as long as it doesn't weigh more than 2 to 3oz than I was good to go,she said even if it takes me 30 mins to eat that 3oz she was ok with that, it never made sense to me to measure my meats in a measuring cup, I can't see trying to fit a turkey burger into a 1/4 measuring cup, I've been doing fine with the food scale, the only thing I measure in a cup is fruits,veggies,yogurts,puddings,etc-stuff like that-Good Luck obviously you've been doing well with the way you have been doing thngs for the past 9 months-11weeks and down 52lbs-whoo-hoo...Tori

Lezlie - if you are using Fitday and you see the oz units - that is the weight ounces. The volume measure for non-liquid there is typically cups. For instance, I had meatless lasagna tonight - the measurement on Fitday for that was a choice between cups, cubic inches, pieces (as measured as a fraction of a 8x8 or a 7x12 pan) or quantity not specified. With regards to the chicken, that would be the weight ounces that are equal to the caloric and protein values specified. You're doing great, Lezlie...JR

Maybe I am radical, but, I am 8 months post op, I don't measure anything, I just use a saucer or small bowl and eyeball it. i know that to meet the protien requirements prescribed by my dr and nutritionist I need to eat aprox 6 oz meat, fish, or chicken a day. that is a poece aprozx the size of the palm of my hand, not including the fingers. I eat that devided in to 3 meals. I eat 6 meals a day. other foods are aprox 1 tablespoon serving size. my "snack" meals are usually friut. I am down 95 pounds. start 260, now 165, goal 140. I am real pleased with my progress and my Dr. says I am ahead of schedule.

10 months post-op and haven't really measured anything in ages. I go by my stomach. Stop when I am full. One thing this surgery taught me was to really listen to my body. Wish I could offer more help :>)

You don't sound like your eating too much at all, and if you are at goal, well, thats proof that you are not eating too much too. I wouldn't obsess over whether to use cup measurements or scales. If its meat/poultry/fish use a food scale and measure the oz's. If its liquid use the cups. Keep it simple and after a while I should think that you would be able to eyeball what an ounce of something looks like without having to use a scale.
