Question:
Elevated Pt & Ppt results
Had my PATs done and PT & PPT results were elevated; retested, same result. Has anyone experienced this and still been able to have the surgery? Have to see a hematologist, but Rosemary in Dr. Ballantyne's office has hinted that I might not be able to have the surgery. Hopefully she's speaking out of turn, cause she's not the doctor, but now I'm scared. — lorien (posted on May 11, 2003)

you mean PT and PTT, those are test to indicate the clotting factor of your
blood. If they're saying that the results are elevated, then they are
saying that it's taking your blood longer than normal time to clot. That
could be a problem during surgery as you could hemorrage. They want you to
see a hematologist because it may be treatable. People with hemophilia
still have surgery and I've seen them do a "bloodless" cesarean
(sp) section where they cut then cauterize where the blood seeps, so I
think Rosemary should continue to let the Surgeon decide. Even if this
particular surgeon won't do the surgery, you may find one who will. I hope
this help.

I know a few people with the same problem before PS. They had to have some
vit K treatments. See the specialist to get it taken care of before
surgery. I had the same elevated PT and almost died from my PS, I was
unaware I had a problem until after, so you're lucky you're getting it
taken care of now. Good Luck!
