Question:
Will allergies delay surgery?
I am allergic not to any meds but to dust, cats, and certain pollenating plants. Generally spring and summer are bad for me...and I may be having my surgery sometime this summer. Will it matter if I'm sneezing my head off from allergies? Or should I just pop benedryl like candy and pray for a easy time? — Renee B. (posted on May 2, 2003)

My doctor told me sinus is a concern and that if I still had my cough and
congestion when it was time for surgery he would cancel surgery.

Get on the over the counter allergy meds (Claritin or Alavert) or get a
prescription and take it til a week before surgery (or up til surgery if
your doc allows depending on what's in the meds). A congested sniffle will
cancel the surgery. Good luck and God Bless!

I was allowed to take my claritin the morning of surgery with the tiniest
amount of water to get it down and they gave me a nasal medicine post-op
for my sinus allergies.
