Question:
Bruxism, apnea, and CPAP- Will my mouth guard be in the way?
I have to wear an acrylic mouth gaurd due to severe bruxism. I have not had a sleep study done, but my faher has sleep apnea and I have the same symptoms. I do n ot know enough about the CPAP. Could anyone tell me if the mouth gaurd will interfere if I am put on a CPAP. — Jennifer P. (posted on March 23, 2003)

You can get a mask with nasal pillows (I have that type) so it won't
interfere with the mouth guard...JR

Hi, Jennifer;
Have been treated for OSA for the past 11 years. I've had a mask over my
nose so it won't interfere with you mouth piece. I tried the nose pillows
and they gave me sores inside the nostrils so I went back the the nasal
mask that I used before that. If you have OSA PLEASE get a sleep study as
my husband had it and he died from it. was NOT the best way to wake up in
the morning. Consult your doctor and get that sleep study. I'm really
looking forward to the night that I no longer have to use my CPAP machine.
Brother-in-law had same surgery 3 or 4 years ago and doesn't need his since
he reached goal. Something to really look forward to. Also attended a Wish
Center Seminar 2 yrs ago and there were several people that were post op
that said that they no longer needed their machines since they got close to
and reached their goal weight after surgery. Good Luck to you. My surgery
was supposed to be tomorrow but the hospital is closing down 2 operating
rooms and my surgery was one of many that have to be rescheduled, Dr.
Vitello thinks it will be about 2 more weeks.

A CPAP mask should not bother you as most of them just go over your nose.
Unless your mouth guard makes you keep your mouth open at night, you
shouldn't have a problem.

I have used mouth guard and CPAP mask since 1995. Nothing goes in your
mouth with the Cpap, you will be fine.
