Question:
I had only 75cm of my intestines bypassed, is this enough?

I hope this is enough to lose the weight and keep it off without a life long struggle. I am 5'5" and 259 pre-op and want to get to 140. Is this possible? How much have other here had removed and how did you do. Also is this proximal or distal.    — missysworld (posted on February 13, 2003)

This would be considered proximal. 150 is considered distal I think. The more that is bypassed, the less amount of nutrients are absorbed. I am sure you would still lose weight with 75. I have 100 bypassed and I have lost about 114 pounds in a little over 6 months. Hope this helps you out a little! (open RNY 7/23/02 -114 lbs)

I had less then you bypassed, I have no idea how much, maybe 10 inches or so. Anyway, I was 240lbs @ 5'7 & I am down 73lbs in 5 months. I have perfect bloodwork & so does most of the people who have surgery by my surgeon. We all attribute it to the ability to absorb most of our food & vitamins. You'll do fine!

I had 200cm bypassed and had my surgery on 1/13/03, so we'll know more in the coming months, but my surgeon decides how much he will bypass on each patient according to their BMI. With only 120 lbs for you to lose, it wouldn't make sense to bypass 200cm on you. Why put your body through that extra malabsorption when it's not needed? It's a potential danger to you because the more bypassed, the bigger chance of Anemia, Osteoporosis, etc. Thats why a lifelong committment to vitamin therapy is so important. Your surgeon did right by you, now relax and enjoy the journey!

I had 200cm bypassed and wish I had more bypassed. I have only lost 72 pounds in a year. The DR said 400cm is distal.
