Question:
Do people age faster after surgery?

I read that after RNY people lack a hormone similar to human growth hormone, which results in rapid aging. I am waiting for ins. approval for a lap RNY. Frankly I feel like I'm 80 right now so I don't think this is going to deter me. (I'm actually 43) Anyone know anything about this.    — Cheryl V. (posted on July 10, 2002)

There is so much misinformation on the net. I try to listened to only those who can quote a reliable source. Logically, how could being thinner and healthier age you. In some people, when they lose the fat in their face, they now look their age because the wrinkles become more visible.

My mother-in-law said the same thing. We have several friends who have had WLS. I agree in the beginning when they were healing and sore they looked pretty bad. I have had back surgery and a C-Section. That first week after, I looked pretty bad too! Now they look great. My friend Debra Reeves looks at least 10 years younger now that the thin person who has been smothering inside her all these years is out. I see all the pictures on here and I am amazed at how much younger some of these people look. I say, they look great and feel great and there is always someone like my mother-in-law, aka ray of sunshine to look for something nasty to say. Ignore them! Good luck to us all.

Maybe it just seems that way since life is so much better now that the time just seems to fly by. :-)

It probably has something to do with the fact fat stores estrogen, and estrogen makes skin look more youthful and elastic. Therefore, our skin and faces may lose a bit of glimmer when we lose weight because those hormone levels are approaching the normal range.
