Question:
How long after you sent papers to OSUH was it untill you had a surgery date?
I have to send my papers after I pick them up from my PCP ...my insurance says it covers surgery for the morbidly obese, so it should be no problem. I know that there will be a psyc. test and dietairy classes so if you have been thru it how long did it take until you had a surgery date? Thanks! — Brenda T. (posted on March 12, 2002)

I was going to go through OSU but You have to go through a lengthy
interview process before you even meet the surgeon. First you talk to
Simone then to Kathy Horton the nurse then you meet with the doctor if they
think that you are a good canidate for the surgery. Then after I got
approved for surgery in November of 2001 I was told that it would be late
spring early summer before I could have surgery. So if you make it all the
way through their program it could possible 3-4 months before you get a
surgery date.

I have to tell you, i'm currently going through OSU...and if you have
another option (such as Doctor Chopan...or something like that in Grove
City) you might want to go that route becuase it might be quicker, i have
OSU insurance and so i'm kinda stuck. I submitted my application last
July....and didn't even hear anything until November, only to be told that
I hadn't tried hard enough (even though i had several pages for a diet
history, including Dr supervised)and i had to take a three month nutrition
class which started in December, i've jUST finished that last week...and
they told me that i probably won't actually have surgery for another 4
months or so since there are still physical exam, psych exam (which i've
done) meet with the dietician...and this is all before they even go for
insuance approval which they do while you take a 4 week course about like
after surgery and THEN you meet the surgeon if you're approved.
This is just where I'm at, its kinda sfrustrating but if i want the surgery
this is my path, hopefully it will be easier and quicker for you!!!

For quicker results you also might want to check out Mid Ohio Surgical
Associates. Dr. Price has been doing the surgery for over 20 years. He
has a new associate who did my surgery, Dr. Tim Custer and you can probably
get in to see him fairly quickly. If you have sleep apnea, psychiatric
treatment or drugs or cardiac problems, you will have to have additional
testing. Otherwise, if you don't they would send in for insurance
approval. I was first seen by Dr. Custer on 8/27/01, had my insurance
approval on 9/13/01 and had my surgery 11/5/01. 2 months from start to
finish.
OSU makes you jump through a LOT of hoops before you even get to see a
doctor.
