Question:
My surgery may be cancelled due to cyst on kidney
Someone please let me know everything will be ok. I had to have a cat scan done last week and they found a cyst on one of my kidneys. When I talked to the Drs. office yesterday, I was told that the dr. would need to look at the x-ray and decide whether or not he would do the surgery. I am so afraid that they are going to cancel my surgery, and I can't get a straight answer from my dr.'s office. The person in the office yesterday told me she would let me know today, but whe I called her I was told she wouldn't be in today, but that another person would be in and they would have her call me. I am so worried. I don't want to have this cancelled, especially since I finally got up the nerve to go through with this after thinking about it for 2 years and doing all this research. I will be so disappointed if this doesn't happen for me. — Terry H. (posted on June 27, 2001)

I can imagine your fear in regards to this. Please just kepe in mind if
they do cancel it.. its for your health and safety. It may open up the
door for you to get the cyst on your kidney take care of and then allow the
door to open for the WLS you seek. Just think.. the Dr does have your best
interest in mind. Good luck.

I personally know my surgeon operated on someone who had severe kidney
problems and with only one kidney. Perhaps your surgery won't be
cancelled. It it is, it may be because the surgeon is not comfortable
doing it. You can always look elsewhere for another surgeon who will. I
hope all goes well for you in all regards.

I have read about cysts on the kidney and they are quite common. You can do
a search on the internet and read about them. It is only if you have
polycystic kidney disease that you will have damage to the kidneys. This is
more serious than simple cysts. The doc may also just want to make sure it
is a cyst and not a tumor.

I lost half of my right kidney to a cyst 16 years ago. You need to have
the cyst checked out which can be done non-invasively. If you are in good
shape you can go ahead with your surgery. If you need to have the kidney
treated first you can still go ahead with your surgery eventually. MAKE
SURE BOTH YOU WLS SURGEON AND YOUR NEPHROLOGIST/UROLOGIST KNOW WHAT THE
OTHER IS DOING. Don't think that this ends your chances for WLS. It may
just delay them a bit. Actually, my kidney problems added a co-morbidity
for me which helped with my insurance appeal.

I also had a kidney cyst, my surgeon told me I had to get the green light
from the urologist that i was seeing. When I had surgury the rny was done
first then they wheeled me to a different room so the urologist did his
stuff. When I had my cat scan, it wouldnt pickup what the image was on my
kidney. I had a cyst and some thickening of the kidney also. They ruled
out cancer, I have to go back to the urologist next week so he can tell me
his side of the story. I am 15 days post op..

While waiting for my gastric bypass, my gallbladder got really inflamed.
During the ultrsound, they found a mass in my kidney and another on my
adrenal gland. My GI surgeon referred me to a urologist who did a CT scan
and numerous ultrasounds over a few months. They've decided the mass is
cystic and I'm now on a 6 month watch. My urologist has cleared me for RNY
(which is scheduled for 10/7) and scheduled me for a follow-up CT scan in 6
months. He has been very encouraging since obesity is a risk factor for
kidney cancer. If you haven't been to a urologist, you should see one, just
for peace of mind. Your gastric bypass may need to be delayed a short time
while they make sure it will not interfere. I'll keep you in my prayers.
