Question:
How important is it to have a caretaker for the first week or so?

I live alone and wonder how important it will be to have a caretaker there at home with me, either to drop in or to stay. What do y'all think? What have your experiences been? I'm having an open RNY on 4/20. Again, I'd appreciate your feedback.    — Mary H. (posted on March 29, 2001)

I think it all depends on what shape your in... can you get up and around now because after surgery it will be difficult if you did you shopping and cleaning right before surgery and you had someone stop by once a day to check if you needed anything I am sure you would be * OK * anylize your self and be honest with your assesment anything is possible

My husband had to go back to work the day after I got home from the hospital. He came home around noon, to check on me and to take our dogs for a walk. Then he left me again to go back to work. Just make sure you have your things in reach, top shelf of refrigerator, and, easy access for everything so you don't have to bend to much the first few days. Also if you happen to drop something get something to help you pick it up. It was very helpful to me. Good luck.

I had my surgery 2-7-01 and came home alone. My sister checked on me twice the 1st week. I think you will be fine as long as you have someone you can call if need be and to take you to 1st Dr appt.

I am not married and have a 14 year old daughter. I didn't want to tie her down to taking care of me while I was recovering, but it was helpful for her to be there for lifting and bending situations. Other than that, unless you have complications, you should be fine. Make sure you have someone to call in case you do have a problem.
