Question:
Does this happen to anyone else??

I have started to notice a pattern now that I am almost 6 months post-op. Whenever I am due for my period, and after it starts, I notice I get hungrier, and I crave sweets more. The only real sweet I eat to curb the craving is a little cool whip on sugar free pudding, or something like this. But I seem to be hungry all the time during this!! Eating little snacks- I am eating healthy snacks such as peeled apples, 1/2 banana, jerky, and my protien shakes of course, among other things as well. I also noticed that I was almost 3lbs heavier on the scale this morning!! I almost fell over!! IS THIS NORMAL?? Should I stop snacking altogether? Should I be able to eat an entire apple? I guess I just need some major advice once again!!!!!! Oh Yeah, I am down 88lbs(except this morning only down 86lbs!!)    — Lauren P. (posted on March 7, 2001)

I am 33 years old and I fight this same battle at ovulation and menstruation, and noticed it about 6 months post-op, too. My weight fluctuates 5-7 pounds during menstruation from water retention. I bet that's what yours is from also. As long as your snacking doesn't lead to grazing, I would think you'd be fine. Just be very aware of how much you are eating. The best advice I have received is to consume as much protein as possible early in the morning to reduce cravings for carbs, and it works. Try to get your protein shake in for breakfast, and maybe include a protein bar as a mid-morning snack. I have heard from others who have this same experience. I think it's more related to hormones than to wls, and I plan to inquire with my GYN at my annual check-up for ways to prevent it. Good luck!

Salt and chocolate the week before, water retention, and weight loss afterwards is my usual menstrual cycle. I just came from weighing at BTC and I did lose 3 pounds this past month, even without exercising and eating, what I thought was alot, during my PMS week. What I try to do is wait and not eat for 2-3 hours and try and keep it healthy (not always possible- sometimes I just NEED that sugar free fudgesicle!). Thing is, I haven't gained yet, but I don't weigh until after the last day of my period. Why court depression??

I would simply say don't weigh yourself during your period. That is the time when your weight should jump around slightly. It's only 2# sweetie. You sound very committed to sticking to your program. I wouldn't worry about such small weight fluctuations. Congrats on your weightloss and remember your self-worth cannot be found in a number on the scale. Good luck with everything:-)
