Question:
Buying Insurance, Will This Work?
I'm a college student in Oregon and have the Oregon Health Plan. In January, I get some financial aid and usually have a couple of hundred dollars left over. OHP will cover the surgery but has a track record of denying big time. I was thinking about maybe purchasing insurance for a while and going ahead with the surgery. Anyone think that this might work and what would be a good insurance company to go to? Thanks for your help and support! — Jenifer S. (posted on November 14, 2000)

Hi there - I think it sounds like a good idea, but before you do, check to
see if the insurance companies cover wls and if there is a waiting period.
Of course each insurance company offers different policies, and a lot of
people are covered under employer policies which cover more. A good
resource would be to check out the insurance page on this site. Good luck.

Keep in mind that it is unfortunate but when you are choosing a policy
which is not through an employer they have the right to deny you based on
your weight. I know this from experience because my husband and I were
going to pay for HealthNet and they denied us, I have a BMI of 55. I am
sure that not all of them are that way, but HealthNet is. Good luck to you.
