Question:
Support hose?
Hi, I'm still in my "research" stage (firt appointment w/ doc on 9-5-00). I have seen alot of "blood clot" talk (embolism etc)...did anyone have on support hose after surgery?? Isn't it true that they greatly reduce the risk of blood clots after surgery?? Just wondering. — Stephanie D. (posted on September 3, 2000)

I did not get support hose but along with the medicines they give for
clotting I had the same pumps that Barb had. They were quite soothing also.
From my understanding, yes they do reduce the risk of clots post-op.

I have had five different surgeries at four different hospitals. At
everyone I was required to wear the support stockings, considered a risk
reducing thing they do for every surgery. I had to wear them post op for a
period of time as well. It is vague to me how long post op I wore them but
I know it has much to do with how much walking you begin to do. The sooner
you are up walking the better for lessening the chance of blood clots.

I work at a hospital with the post "open hearters" and they all
wear TED stockings. They are kinda ugly but so are blood clots, so the
more you are up moveing the less you will need them SO WALK!!
