Support hose?

Hi, I'm still in my "research" stage (firt appointment w/ doc on 9-5-00). I have seen alot of "blood clot" talk (embolism etc)...did anyone have on support hose after surgery?? Isn't it true that they greatly reduce the risk of blood clots after surgery?? Just wondering.
