Question:
Since I drink 30 grams protein in the morning and 30 grams of protein in the
afternoon, can I NOT eat protein for my meals? I crave vegtables and fruits but with trying to get in all that protein there is no room for anything else. Is this okay since I am getting my 60 grams of protein a day? — Deania W. (posted on August 31, 2000)

My suggestion is that you eat some protein with your meals - because you
and I both need to change our old eating habits and learn to
"eat" in a healthy manner. Along with that protein, eat some
fruits and veggies, of course. My surgeon does not recommend that we get
our protein from supplements as it becomes a crutch, it doesn't train us to
eat properly, and some protein supplements supply too many calories.

Hi There,
Sounds ok to me, but, what does your surgon say. I know I
am required to take in 88gr. of protien a day. But
I understand what you are saying. There are alot of veggie
with protiens also. Fruit, is loaded with the sugars, that
are natural, so that may be what you are craving also. Linda

If you are using a good protein supplement and no milk, you are getting the
correct blend of predigested protein and no wasted calories. The 60g a day
should be adequate unles syou plateau, then another 30g drink won't hurt
you at all. We are no longer in a position where we can get TOO MUCH
protein. Since food has almost no protein value for us, you are wise to
use supplement for your "count". Whatever is supplemented you
can be "sure" of and removes your focus from the perpetual
"food count". I watch my food for sugar grams only and that has
REALLY set me free from the dominion of food.

I did this too, and then I asked my nutritionist if it was OK. She said
she would rather see me have 1 shake as a snack, rather than rely on two as
my main source of protein. After all, we should learn to eat wisely, and
the shakes are a no-brainer (main reason I was using them). She suggested
I try 3 mini meals a day @ 10 grams of protein each, and have my shake (24)
for a snack. This breaks up the monotomy of a shake based protein source
and I find it "do-able". I am allowed milk, and prefer my shakes
made with it.... and sometimes just have a glass of milk plain, to help
with protein goals... Check with your surgeon/ or nutritionist for more
information.
